When Duct Cleaning Helps
The EPA recommends duct cleaning when there is visible mold growth inside the ducts, when ducts are infested with vermin or insects, or when ducts are clogged with excessive dust and debris that is being released into rooms. After significant renovation that produced construction dust, duct cleaning removes residue that would otherwise circulate for months. And when moving into a home with an unknown history, cleaning the ducts removes whatever the previous occupants left behind.
When It Does Not Help
Routine duct cleaning as a preventive measure has not been shown to improve health outcomes or air quality, according to the EPA. If your air quality problem originates from a non-duct source like moisture intrusion, allergens in bedding, chemical off-gassing, or poor ventilation, spending $300 to $500 on duct cleaning will not address the cause. An assessment identifies whether the ductwork is likely contributing before you spend the money.
