The NASA Study in Context
NASA's 1989 study found that certain plants could remove specific VOCs from a sealed chamber over 24 hours. The study was conducted in a small, sealed, controlled environment, not a home. Subsequent research has consistently shown that in real-world residential settings, the air exchange rate from normal ventilation (even in a tightly sealed home) overwhelms any VOC removal plants provide. You would need hundreds of plants per room to achieve meaningful pollutant reduction.
What Plants Actually Do
Houseplants improve aesthetics, may improve mood, and contribute small amounts of oxygen and humidity. They do not meaningfully reduce VOCs, particulate matter, CO2, or allergens in a residential setting. If you enjoy plants, keep them. But do not rely on them as an air quality intervention.
